Format

  • Each match will be played over 18 holes or until a match is won.

  • Each hole is played for and is won by the player that holes their ball in the fewest (net) strokes.

  • A hole is halved if each player holes out in the same number of strokes (net) each. The match is won by the player that is leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes remaining to be played.

  • If after 18 holes the match is tied extra holes are required and the match shall continue in the order played over the first 18 holes until a hole, and therefore the match is won.

  • If a match is tied and it’s not possible to play extra holes the tie can be decided by the toss of a coin.

  • All matches are played in accordance with the Rules of Golf. Matches should be played from the yellow tees.

  • The “Honour” on the first tee should be decided by the toss of a coin.

Handicaps & Stroke Allowance

  • Maximum handicap is 24.

  • Players should use their CONGU handicap if this is 24 or less on the day of the match or Society base handicap if they don’t have a CONGU handicap.

  • Players with a handicap of 25 or higher must use 24 as their handicap.

  • Strokes are received by the higher handicap player of the two players and are calculated as 3/4 of the difference of the two handicaps. These shots are taken against the stroke index of the course.

  • Where extra holes are played, shots are taken as before over the first 18 holes. Maximum shots given will be 18 (that is, not more than 1 shot per hole.)

Venue and green fees

  • The “Home” player will have home advantage and have choice of venue.

  • The cost of green fees should be shared by the two players.

  • Where the home player is not a club member the match will be played at the away player’s home club, unless both players are not club members in which case they must agree between them where to play the match.

Timescales for playing matches

  • Each match MUST be played by the closing date for that round.

  • Both competitors should try to contact one another but the responsibility is on the home player to contact the away player as soon as the draw is known to organise the match and arrange tee booking if required at a time and date agreeable to both players.

  • If the away player cannot agree to play on three dates suggested by the home player and an agreement cannot be reached on a mutually agreeable alternative date to play the match the match should be decided by either the toss of a coin or voluntary withdrawal of either player.

  • If it is not possible to arrange the match, the home player should contact the competition secretary to advise him of this.

  • The winner should contact the competition secretary with the result.

  • The final will be played at the final 27 hole outing of the season.
