World Golf Handicaps

See the following information about World Golf Handicaps

For each course visited members should obtain their Course handicap based on their Handicap Index, either using the handicap chart at the course, by calculating their course handicap using the slope rating of the course, or from the My England Golf (MYEG) app.

Their playing handicap on the day will be 95% of the course handicap (for singles comps) See Playing Handicaps Allowance Table for other formats.

New members

On joining the society a new member will play off their club or World Golf Handicap (WGH) Playing Handicap for each course.

If they do not have a WGH handicap or that handicap is not a “competition” handicap they will require their handicap to be assessed. This will be done after playing in  two singles events at which time the handicap secretary will assess their handicap.

This will preclude them from winning prizes at their first two singles events. Until the handicap has been assessed they will play off a handicap of 22, or one that they think is most appropriate if that is less.

Handicap rules

Your WGH Playing handicap can never be less than your society handicap.

Players shall play off their society handicap. and should inform the handicap secretary in any changes to their WGH handicap if they have one.

The handicap secretary will amend the handicap of a winner and runner up of any outing by -2 and -1 shot respectively, except where the winner has a WGH/Society handicap of 7 or less the handicap cut for winning will be one shot only and where the winner has a WGH/Society handicap of 19 or over the handicap cut for winning will be 3 shots. These will be applied to a player's current WGH Playing handicap on the day of any event. For members without a WGH handicap the handicap adjustment will be applied to their "Base" society handicap.

This handicap adjustment shall remain until after the same event in the following year.

Rule 23 changes

The competition secretary may adjust a player’s society handicap under rule 23 where the player does not have an official WGH handicap and they are playing well above or below their current society handicap in society competitions.

Rules for members without a WGH handicap

The following handicap rules will apply to all Society members without a WGH handicap:

1. Non-WGH member mid season handicap cuts

Non WGH member who scores 36 points or over in any event (after disregarding any temporary cuts) –

permanent base handicap cut applies (0.3 per point over 36,rounded up or down). In practice a cut would be applied where the score was 38 or over.

example: 39 points = 3 x 0.3 =0.9 (rounded up to 1 shot cut)or a score of 36 points while playing with a 2 shot temp cut(38 points with no cut) = 2 x 0.3 = 0.6 (rounded up to 1 shot cut)

– this is in addition to the 1 or 2 shot temporary cut if they win the comp or come second.

2. Non-WGH member end of season handicap adjustment

Because it is not practical to adjust all handicaps on an event by event basis there will be an end of season upward adjustment for non WGH members based on scores throughout the season
after adjusting for any temporary cuts that applied.
Each non-WGH member will get a “0.3” lift at the end of the season for each event scoring under 26 (adjusted to remove temporary cuts), rounded up or down as necessary.
This would mean a player who scored less than 26 in 2 results over the season would get a 1 shot lift for the following season (0.3 x 2 =.6 rounded up to 1)

Additionally, the following rules will apply:

• Non-WGH Members obtaining WGH handicap – WGH handicap will apply immediately. Any cuts currently applying will be retained until they have expired.
• WGH members leaving playing club – WGH handicap currently held becomes Non-WGH Base Handicap immediately. Any cuts currently applying will be retained until they have expired.
Rules for Non-WGH handicaps apply from then on.
